Description:
Weizen means "wheat" in German, so it's clear what beer styles this elegant tall glass is intended for. This type of glass has a distinctive shape commonly seen not only in its "native" Bavaria, but increasingly also in other regions. Its geometry is somewhat similar to the pilsner type: a tall (one of the tallest) and slender glass with a heavy base for good stability. The middle of the body is very narrow and gradually widens toward the top, where it slightly narrows again just below the rim (this is the main difference from the pilsner type). The wide upper section provides ample space for a beautiful, thick, fluffy foam that traps the typical aroma of wheat beers and lasts a long time. The glass itself is very elegant and beautifully showcases the colors of wheat beers—from the cloudy golden Hefeweizen to the filtered clear Kristalweizen. These glasses are usually thin-walled (although in Bavaria you can also find heavier versions with a handle and a pewter lid), so they do not keep the beer cold for very long. This type of glass can exceptionally be used as a substitute for a pilsner glass for bottom-fermented beers.
