At first glance, it resembles an opening flower, but its unusual shape is not just a matter of appearance. The Tulipe-type beer glass has its specific place in the world of beer and can offer a completely different serving experience with certain beers. What makes the tulip shape so interesting?

Description

The tulip is a glass similar to a cognac glass (bulbous and stemmed), but with a fundamental difference in its upper third. There, the glass does not narrow further like a Snifter, but on the contrary flares out like a trumpet or a flower (hence the name tulip) and provides enough space for a fluffy head that lasts for a long time. These are visually interesting glasses with a refined shape.

The tulip glass is usually stemmed – mostly with a short stem, but recently also with a relatively long and thin one (it is precisely this version that is now very popular among microbreweries in the Czech Republic). However, we can also encounter a stemless variant more and more frequently. Just like a cognac glass, the tulip's narrowing body traps the aroma of the beer and doesn't let it escape. It is said that the tulip can release and, most importantly, capture aromas and fragrances from beer like no other glass.

In most cases, the tulip glass has thin walls, so it is generally not a suitable glass for lagers and other beers that require low serving temperatures. Conversely, it is suitable for stronger, aromatic, or heavily hopped beers (ideal for Belgian Ales). Similar to some other glasses, here too we can encounter glasses with laser-etched artificial scratches at the bottom, which cause bubbles to release from the bottom and create endless streams rising to the surface.
