In addition, this bulbous and wide glass fits comfortably in the hand. This deliberately warms the beer up to the optimal drinking temperature. As the beer warms, CO2 is released along with its aroma. Thanks to the shape (the glass narrows at the rim), the bouquet is trapped inside the glass and does not escape. The primary function of this glass is therefore to extract all the aromas from the beer. The snifter usually features a short stem.
Recently, stemless types have also appeared (just like with the tulip glass). The cognac glass is suitable for beers with a distinct aroma or for strong (over 7% ABV), top-fermented styles (barley wine, Belgian styles, Double/Imperial IPA), as well as bottom-fermented styles such as Eisbock.
